C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous vous informons du décès de Sylvie Bélanger, décédée paisiblement à Montréal le 8 octobre 2020, après une courageuse bataille contre le cancer.
Elle laisse dans le deuil: son dévoué mari Richard (Rick) Simpson, sa mère Denise Deschênes, ses frères Mario et Laurier, sa belle-sœur Ginette, son neveu et nièces bien-aimés, de nombreux amis et collègues artistes, à Montréal, Toronto, Amsterdam et Paris.
Artiste reconnue dans le domaine de la vidéo et de l’installation, son travail a fait l’objet de grandes expositions au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Europe et en Asie.
Parallèlement à sa carrière d’artiste, elle en a poursuivi une autre dans l’éducation artistique à l’Université de Windsor, au San Francisco Art Institute et jusqu’à sa récente retraite, à l’Université d’État de New York à Buffalo. Une enseignante très engagée, sa rigueur et son intégrité intellectuelles, associées à sa générosité exceptionnelle, ont contribué à la formation de générations de jeunes artistes accomplis et reconnaissants.
En raison de la pandémie et conformément aux souhaits de Sylvie, il n’y aura pas de service funéraire.

Sylvie Bélanger peacefully passed away in Montreal on October 8, 2020, at the age of 69 after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her devoted husband Richard (Rick) Simpson, her mother Denise Deschênes, her brothers Mario and Laurier, sister-in-law Ginette, her beloved nephews and nieces, and friends and fellow artists in Montreal, Toronto, Amsterdam, and Paris.
A well-known artist in the field of video and installation, her work has been the subject of major exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. Along with her career as an artist, over the years she taught at the University of Windsor, The San Francisco Art Institute and, until her recent retirement, at the State University of New York at Buffalo. As a professor, her intellectual rigor and integrity, combined with her generosity, contributed to the formation of generations of accomplished young artists. Sylvie’s infectious enthusiasm and constructive approach to life will dearly be missed by all who met her.
Due to the pandemic, in keeping with Sylvie’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
